The misuse of alcohol and/or drugs is a significant issue within Welsh society and causes harms to individuals, families and the wider community. In a work context alcohol and drugs can impact on performance and absenteeism, and increase the risk of accidents.
Employers are in an ideal place to promote healthy lifestyles and to work with employees to reduce some of the contributors to using alcohol or drugs, for example, to relieve workplace stress. Importantly, they can be ready to support employees, who have developed issues with alcohol or drugs, in a sympathetic way and facilitate access to the help they need. From a health and safety point of view, employers also have a key role in communicating and enforcing a zero tolerance policy to alcohol and drugs at work.
