I am breastfeeding. Can I have a COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes. The JCVI have recommended that you can have the COVID-19 vaccine if you are breastfeeding. Vaccinated women produce antibodies (a type of natural substance in the body that helps protect against bacteria and viruses), which will help protect them against COVID-19 disease. The antibodies made following vaccination can pass into breast milk and may help protect breastfed babies. Very small traces of vaccine have been found in the breast milk of some vaccinated women, but they disappear after a few days. There is no evidence of harm to the baby and any traces are expected to be broken down with breast milk in the baby’s stomach. So, you should not stop breastfeeding in order to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
