Foundations in Improvement

Who is this for? 

This short online course is mandatory for all NHS Wales staff, regardless of your role. You can access it through the NHS Electronic Staff Record (ESR). The goal is to make Quality Improvement (QI) a natural part of your work. Even if you are not an NHS Wales employee, you can still take this course if you work in a health and care setting where QI principles apply. 

About the course 

This course is for beginners who want to learn about improvement and its importance in healthcare. You will learn the basic principles of improvement and how to apply them in your work. You can find the course on your ESR e-learning [platform]. If you need more help, you can contact the Academy [team].

    Fundamentals of Improvement

    Who is this for? 

    This course is for anyone who works in healthcare and wants to make positive changes in the system, whether individually or as part of a team. You only need to complete the Foundations in Improvement e-learning course through the NHS ESR, no other improvement experience is required. 

    About the course 

    Learn the basics of improvement in this one-day course that is ideal for beginners. You will discover the essential principles of improvement and get familiar with diagnostic tools that help you understand and enhance systems. This course is dynamic and engaging, and it will enable you to support local improvements. It will set you up to undertake our [Improvement in Practice] course. Some of the quality improvement teams in local health boards and trusts offer this course as well.

    Improvement in Practice

    Who is this for? 

    If you want to lead a specific improvement project, this course is for you. You should have some prior knowledge of improvement principles, such as from our Fundamentals of Improvement course or a similar one. This course will help you take the next step in your improvement journey. 

    About the course 

    This course will help you turn your improvement ideas into reality with expert guidance. You will lead a real improvement project of your choice and learn how to set improvement aims, measure outcomes, and test changes on a small scale before applying them widely. You will also have plenty of opportunities to discuss and collaborate with your peers and trainers, who will support you throughout the course. Improvement in Practice is a practical course that will equip you with the skills and confidence to make a difference.  

    Included in course: 

    • Four modules of classroom learning over four to five months 

    • Practical  

    • Collaborative 

    • Implementation of a local improvement project 

    • E-certificate on completion of your improvement project 

    • Self-directed and classroom learning 

    • Coaching from an improvement expert 

    What will you learn? 

    This course will: 

    • Teach you how to lead an improvement project effectively with guidance and support 

    • Allow you to engage and learn from your peers and coaches in a classroom setting

    Coaching for Improvement

    Who is this for? 

    This course will help you enhance your coaching skills for improvement and support others to achieve their improvement goals. 

    About the course 

    If you want to help others lead successful improvement projects, the Coaching for Improvement course is for you. You should have a solid understanding of improvement concepts, methods, and tools. In this course, you will learn how to coach for improvement with our team’s guidance and support over three months. You will develop your skills and confidence to help others define a problem and lead a focused improvement project.

    Improvement Advisor

    Who is this for? 

    This course is designed for improvement leaders who want to lead change in health and care settings, or for those seeking additional expertise in quality improvement.  

     

    About the course 

    The Improvement Advisor course – Scottish Improvement Leader (ScIL) will help you design, develop and lead improvement projects that align with organisational priorities and national programmes. You will build on your previous quality improvement knowledge and learn how to generate support and provide advice for improvement. The course is a 12-month programme that combines classroom, online and self-directed learning. You will also apply the theory to practice by undertaking your own improvement project throughout the course. 

     

    What will you learn? 

    This course will: 

    • Teach you the core concepts of Improvement Science in depth 

    • Develop your Improvement Science thinking and techniques for your own improvement projects. 

    • Provide you with the skills to lead and manage change for improvement effectively. 

    • Help you to facilitate learning and coach others in Improvement Science.
