Information for Professionals

Antenatal Screening Wales is a managed clinical network which is part of Public Health Wales, and sits within Maternal and Child (MAC) Screening. ASW has established policies, standards and a performance management framework for antenatal screening.

The ASW Programmes are:

  • Blood group and antibody screening
  • HIV screening
  • Hepatitis B screening
  • Syphilis screening
  • Down’s syndrome, Edwards' syndrome and Patau's syndrome screening
  • Sickle cell and thalassaemia screening
  • Early pregnancy dating scan
  • Fetal anomaly ultrasound scan.

Newly published evidence from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists states that the risk of miscarriage following a chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis in a singleton pregnancy is likely to be below 0.5% of pregnancies (around 1 in 200). If you are having twins, the risk of miscarriage will be around 1% of pregnancies (1 in 100).

A structured record keeping form and consent form for amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) are also available from ASW.

Written information for women on the screening tests available and information for women with higher chance results are available on the public page of this website.
