Musculoskeletal Health

Musculoskeletal conditions

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, also known as Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), are a group of conditions, which affects the bones, joints, muscles, and the spine.  MSKs are typically characterized by pain (often persistent) and limitations in mobility. Within the workplace, musculoskeletal conditions can have a huge impact on people and are one of the main causes of sickness absence in Wales. Poor MSK health has been identified as one of the key reasons behind the recent trend of older workers (50+ years) leaving the labour market.

Good musculoskeletal health is essential to carrying out a full working life. MSKs not only impact on an employee’s mobility and co-ordination, but they also contribute to strength and endurance, which are important for ageing healthily.

Employers play a crucial role in reducing levels of MSKs and supporting their employees to stay fit and well. Employers have a legal duty to provide safe workplaces and protect employees from workplace risks to MSKs that can damage their health. There are risks to employees who are deskbound using display screen equipment, just as there are to workers in manufacturing or construction industries exposed to manual handling and awkward postures. Employers can also support employees to prevent MSKs, and manage existing conditions that are not necessarily work related, thereby improving productivity levels and reducing sickness absence.
