FOI 2024 075 - Cholera

Information Requested:

Would you be able to provide some information about any cases of cholera in Wales in the past 10 years, and also historically before the internet became part of everyday life (I.e. around 1997)

I’m looking at analogue methods (anti-biotic resistance and climate change) as well as role of political leadership with managing waterbone diseases

Information provided for the answer:

Thank you for your recent request.

From 2015 to date, we have evidence of 2 confirmed cases, one in 2015 (unsure if toxigenic) and one in 2019 (O139, non-toxigenic).

Data for 2004-2013 is available online, covering England and Wales Cholera - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). Their last report covers 2011 and 2012 – with 1 case in Wales in each of those years.

Public Health Wales do not hold information further back than this.
