FOI 2023 50 - Hip Replacement Costs

Information Requested:

I wish to make a freedom of information request regarding hip replacement costs under NHS in Wales.
Would you please confirm the following information:
1.    The average cost under NHS Wales for a hip replacement operation.
This should include initial consultant consultation costs; treatment and stay in hospital; cost of prosthesis; post operation physiotherapy costs
2.    Is there a standard NHS Wales allowance within health authorities for this procedure and what value is this allowance for Aneurin Bevan Health Authority?
Thanking you in anticipation of your prompt acknowledgement of my request and the prompt receipt of the information requested.

Information provided for the answer:

Thank you for your recent request dated 13th April 2023.
The 2021/2022 All Wales ‘admitted patient care’ cost of an inpatient primary hip procedure varies according to the type of primary hip procedure undertaken (cemented, uncemented, hybrid or other), but the 2021/2022 average for each of these categories ranges from £7,300 to £11,300 per episode.
It is difficult to quantify the additional interventions that would constitute a ‘standard’ full pathway of care, as this will vary depending on factors such as the type of procedure undertaken, patient needs and outcome of the procedure. For example, the number and type of pre and post operative new and follow-up outpatient attendances would vary with patient requirements.
There is not a standard NHS Wales allowance within health authorities for this procedure, but the 2021/2022 cost of an admitted patient care procedure for a primary hip replacement within Aneurin Bevan Health Board would fall within the average range quoted above.
