25 - When do I get the results of the scan?

  • The screener will give you your results following your scan. The four possible results that you may get after your ultrasound scan are as follows.
  • Normal result (measuring less than 3cm) This means your abdominal aorta is not enlarged and you do not have an AAA. About 95 out of every 100 men screened are told that they have a normal screening result and are not offered any further tests. You don’t need treatment or monitoring. We will not call you back for AAA screening again.
  • Small to medium AAA (measuring 3 to 5.4cm) This means your abdominal aorta is a little wider than normal and you have an AAA. About four out of every 100 men screened are told they have a small or medium AAA.
  • Large AAA (5.5cm) This means your abdominal aorta is much wider than normal and you have an AAA. About six out of every 1000 men screened are told they have a large AAA.
  • We will tell your GP the result of your scan.
