The tool compares all cause age standardised and age specific mortality rates for Welsh local authorities with the equivalent rates in the most alike local authorities in the UK. A Census based Office for National Statistics (ONS) classification was used to form peer groups of the most alike local authorities.
The analysis was originally produced to support the Inverse Care Law programme. Concentrating on the Cwm Taf and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board areas, its aim is to improve healthy life expectancy and reduce health inequities through the targeted provision of high quality, integrated and community focussed services.
The overall age standardised rates are compared for all local authorities within the same peer group. The under 75 years of age and sex specific rates for each Welsh local authority are compared with the equivalent rates for the five local authorities (combined), with the lowest overall age standardised rate within each peer group.
The non-Welsh local authority age standardised rates were only available for a single year and were based on the 1976 European Standard Population (ESP). As such, all age standardised rates in this product are comparable only to other rates based on the 1976 ESP.
The Public Health Wales Observatory has published a local authority peer group mortality comparison tool (.xlsm).
