The Public Health Wales Observatory has produced a range of information to support the orthopaedic service review being led by Directors of Planning at health boards in south Wales.
The data informed a needs assessment led by Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, which was completed in March 2011. Full details of methodology and caveats are given in the needs assessment document that was produced as part of the review and is available here.
The table below shows the information products that can be downloaded for each set of orthopaedic procedures identified by the review. Data are presented according to residence (where the patient lives), provider (where the procedure is carried out) and provider catchment (to illustrate patient flows).
When interpreting the data, it should be noted that variation in procedure rates across Wales could be explained by a combination of:
the underlying need in the population
healthcare-seeking behaviour
response and make-up of services, including geographical access and alternative treatments available
clinical thresholds for treatment
consistency and quality of clinical coding.
For a detailed discussion of the data, see report linked above.
A rapid review of the literature on estimation of need for orthopaedic surgery was also carried out to support this work.
