The National Safeguarding Team (NHS Wales), is an independent team comprising of Designated Doctors, Nurses and a National GP Lead.
The Designated function is delivered by both senior Doctors and Nurses with significant expertise and experience in this specialist field.
The National Safeguarding Team (NHS Wales) is accountable to the Board of Public Health Wales for its work and the provision of independent expert professional advice. Public Health Wales (corporately) reports to the Minister through the Director General.
The work programme is integrated into the IMTP of Public Health Wales and the organisation reports etc., to the Minister.
The National Safeguarding Team (NHS Wales) provides the strategic focus and professional lead to NHS Wales in order to promote the welfare and safeguarding of children, including those children and young people looked after by their Local Authority. Since 2016 the Team has evolved and broadened their strategic focus to include adults at risk. (Social Services & Well-being (Wales) Act 2014).
The National Safeguarding Team (NHS Wales) works across Wales with stakeholders and partners to provide local delivery to the NHS Health Boards, Trusts and Regional Safeguarding Children Boards (RSCBs) and Regional Safeguarding Boards (RSBs for adults).
Designated professionals provide a source of independent expert health advice from an 'All Wales' perspective. The Team have particular skills as a source of independent health expertise in undertaking case reviews of serious abuse and neglect as well as child suicide (Practice Reviews).
The Network strength has been a greater focus on appreciative inquiry and learning through sharing good practice from teams across Wales. Diverse topics have been shared from engagement with children and young people in service design, to a patient’s story of their organisations response to their domestic abuse, through to learning from homicide reviews in mental health services conducted by Health Inspectorate Wales.
From April 2016, the Network’s focus has been widened to include adults at risk with broadened Terms of Reference in line with the Social Services and Well Being (Wales) Act 2014.
