Know Your Numbers! Week 2023 is an annual campaign in the UK that takes place from 4th to 10th September. It is the 23rd anniversary of this initiative, and this year's theme is "Make the time, ease your pressure." The focus of the campaign is on home monitoring as the easiest way for individuals to know their blood pressure numbers and take steps to lower them.
The campaign encourages people to measure their blood pressure at home and urges them to encourage their friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to do the same. The goal is to get everyone involved in measuring their blood pressure at home. The campaign emphasizes the importance of knowing one's blood pressure numbers as the first step in preventing heart attacks and strokes.
High blood pressure, often referred to as "the silent killer," is a major cause of these diseases, but it usually has no symptoms until it's too late. By knowing their numbers, individuals can make healthy lifestyle changes or start taking medications, if necessary, to bring their blood pressure down to a healthy level.
The campaign emphasizes that it is never too early or too late to start checking blood pressure. Regardless of age, individuals can take action to lower their blood pressure and prioritize their health. Home monitoring is highlighted as an effective and inexpensive way to keep blood pressure under control. It allows individuals to take control of their health, feel confident, and reduce the burden on the healthcare system. Home monitoring provides a practical method for individuals to know their numbers without visiting a healthcare professional in person.
During Know Your Numbers! Week 2023, the campaign aims to encourage the use of simple and reliable blood pressure monitors at home. If individuals obtain high readings, they are urged to take the necessary steps to bring their blood pressure under control and raise awareness about the risks of high blood pressure.
It is estimated that around a third of people in the UK have high blood pressure, but most are unaware of it due to the lack of symptoms. Therefore, the campaign emphasizes the importance of getting a blood pressure check to identify any potential issues.
For additional resources on measuring blood pressure at home, individuals can visit the campaign's online hub. The website offers a range of home blood pressure monitoring resources available for download during Know Your Numbers! Week 2023 and beyond.
Those interested in getting involved in the campaign can participate as a Pressure Partner or Patient Ambassador, or simply share the message to raise awareness about the campaign's goals and encourage others to prioritize their health by knowing their blood pressure numbers.
