Temporary change to clinical service due to COVID-19: update 20th July 2020

Due to COVID-19 changes in service delivery have been made with immediate effect, until further notice. These changes have been made to enable us to continue to provide critical support to the COVID-19 diagnostic services and ensure business continuity. Turnaround times (TAT) of services which are currently maintained may be extended.

  1. Specialist testing for Cryptosporidium in immunocompromised patients at high risk: will continue by immunofluorescence microscopy on samples that are  Cryptosporidium negative locally, and will be supplemented by the addition of a newly-validated real-time PCR-based test for Cryptosporidium spp.
  2. Confirmation of equivocal samples: will continue by immunofluorescence microscopy on samples with details of original test result
  3. Genotyping by PCR will continue but turnaround times will be longer 
  4. Subtyping by PCR will not be undertaken unless a major outbreak occurs, then subject to discussion with Head of Unit or deputy
  5. Animal samples taken during a human outbreak will not be genotyped
  6. Genotyping services for water testing laboratories and water companies will be done in public health incidents/event and outbreaks only   
  7. Positive control material will continue to be provided to laboratories on request
  8. Consultation advice will continue to be provided.
