What is Human papillomavirus (HPV)?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that causes nearly all (99.8%) cases of cervical cancer. This is a very common virus that most people will come into contact with during their lives. Around 90% of people clear the virus naturally within two years without any issues. Longer term or persistent infection with high risk types of HPV is linked to a risk of developing cell changes that can lead to cervical cancer.
