The role of the JIGSO midwife and infant feeding

Liz Smith and Rachel Hockett,  Swansea JIGSO team

The award winning JIGSO programme in SBUHB is offered to young and vulnerable expectant mothers and provides holistic care with continuity for the first 1000 days. JIGSO midwives and nursery nurses are able to provide additional antenatal care in the woman’s home and have a key role in sharing public health messages including around infant feeding. Young mothers from a background of deprivation are known to be less likely to breastfeed; however, the JIGSO caseload demonstrates similar or higher rates of breastfeeding than the national average.
