Background

Maternal vaccination is an important public health intervention that helps protect both pregnant women and their babies from serious illnesses, including whooping cough (pertussis), influenza (flu) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

Vaccination during pregnancy can reduce the risk of severe illness in the mother while also providing protection to newborn babies during their first months of life, when they are most vulnerable to infection.

Following the introduction of the RSV vaccination programme in Wales in 2024 and in the context of declining uptake of some maternal vaccines, Public Health Wales carried out a survey aimed at pregnant women and women who had given birth within the previous six months.

The survey explored awareness and understanding of maternal vaccinations, confidence in vaccine safety and effectiveness, sources of information, access to vaccination services, and factors that may influence vaccination decisions during pregnancy.

The findings will contribute to a better understanding of women’s experiences and perspectives and help inform future communication, engagement and service development activities relating to maternal vaccination in Wales.

The survey ran from September to December 2025 via the online CIVICA platform.
