Introduction

Macmillan Cancer Support and the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit of Public Health Wales entered into a partnership in April 2017.  The aim is to deliver insightful analysis of Welsh cancer data to support improved design, testing and implementation of better models of care.  It will do this by using data to improve the understanding of the impact and costs of cancer and its treatment across the primary, secondary and tertiary health care pathway.  This will help us to identify gaps and opportunities to deliver world-class data collection and health intelligence for improved outcomes for people living with and beyond cancer.  Further information regarding the partnership can be found here.

Main points

The partnership consists of a number of projects:

  • Cancer incidence and prevalence by GP (or primary care) cluster network in Wales
  • Cancer patients with other chronic health conditions in Wales:  GP cluster network incidence, prevalence and all Wales survival

To inform the work of the partnership and other researchers in Wales a Landscape paper has been produced to summarise the main datasets and publications in relation to cancer data in Wales.  The landscape paper is available in the Technical information section below.

Cancer incidence and prevalence for Cluster Networks in Wales

On 12th July 2018 we published our latest available cancer incidence and prevalence statistics for the GP (primary care) Cluster Networks in Wales for diagnoses up to 2015. This is the first time we have published these statistics at a Cluster Network level for a number of cancer types.  The data is broken down by age band, area deprivation, rurality, sex and cancer stage at diagnosis.  The information is displayed in an interactive dashboard.

Cancer patients with other chronic health conditions in Wales: GP Cluster Network incidence, prevalence and all Wales survival

On 27th March 2019 we published our latest available cancer incidence and prevalence statistics by Charlson score (a validated tool used by healthcare professionals to predict risk of death and burden of a disease) for the GP (primary care) Cluster Networks in Wales for diagnoses up to 2015. This is the first time we have published these statistics by Charlson score for a number of cancer types.  The data is broken down by age band, area deprivation, rurality and sex (and also cancer stage at diagnosis for incidence). One-year net survival by Charlson score or condition has also been calculated at an all Wales level. The information is displayed in an interactive dashboard.
