Introduction
We conducted this rapid summary during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic to identify ways of communicating with the public and healthcare professions to address concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine and encourage uptake.
Main points
How up to date is this evidence?
We conducted searches for this rapid summary in 2020 and included evidence published between 2011 and 2020.
What we found
We identified five systematic reviews, two guidelines, two intervention studies, two qualitative studies and 12 cross-sectional surveys. Various barriers and facilitators to vaccine uptake were identified, along with several communication strategies to encourage uptake among the general public and healthcare professionals. Important considerations for future COVID-19 mass vaccination campaigns were also included
What this means
This summary may help identify key points on the topic. However, the included research has not been assessed for quality and comes from a wide range of published material.
Technical information
We searched academic databases and grey literature to identify and summarise research evidence to answer the following question:
- What might be effective methods of communicating with the public (including healthcare professionals) to address concerns about the vaccine and encourage uptake?
Glossary
Systematic review: a review that summarises the evidence on a clearly formulated review question according to a predefined protocol, using systematic and explicit methods to identify, select and appraise relevant studies, and to extract, analyse, collate and report their findings. It may or may not use statistical techniques, such as meta-analysis.
