FOI 932 Cancer Incidences

Information Requested:

I am looking for some statistics and finding it really difficult to find up to date cancer statistics. I wondered if you could sign post me to the most current statistics (I was hoping for 2020-2021) for:
1.    Newly diagnosed incidence of cancer (does not bee to be by cancer site, just overall incidence.
2.    Deaths in Wales of cancer in 2020-2021.

I have searched PHW and the office of national statistics and I can’t seem to find what I am looking for.

Information provided for the answer:

hank you for your recent request dated 15 May 2022. Please see the link below for Deaths in Wales from Cancer in 2020-21

Cancer mortality in Wales, 2002-2021 - Public Health Wales (nhs.wales)

Data for 2020 cancer incidence has not published yet, as cancer registrations are still being collated. Latest incidence is available on our website up to 2018 and 2019 incidence will be published within the coming month.
For the following years, these registry data are the highest quality and most complete definitive data on every single case of cancer in the population. They are done to international coding and classification rules and use multiple sources of source data that needs to be weaved together, and then quality assured. Each country’s cancer registry data is comparable and can be used for international statistics. As a result, publishing incidences of cancer are delayed and 2019 will be ready within the month.
Under section 22 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Health Wales can refuse a request for information that is due to be published in the future.  Before doing so however, the organisation is required to consider the public interest in either releasing the information or engaging the exemption.  Whilst there is a significant amount of interest in the information requested, there is also a significant public interest in delivering an effective Public Health service.
Developing the information to make it suitable for publication at this time would incur diverting resources from the critical day to day resources of managing other services that Public Health Wales is expected to deliver.  Whilst the report will be published within the next month, we aim to do this as soon as is reasonably practicable.
As such, we are applying a Section 22 exemption on releasing this information at the current time as it is planned for publication in the near future.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of the decision, you should write to the Corporate Complaints Manager, Public Health Wales NHS Trust, 3, Number 2, Capital Quarter, Tyndall Street, Cardiff, CF10 4BZ.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint or review, you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the complaints procedure provided by the Trust. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:
