What does it mean if my baby has been referred for a hearing assesment?

Your baby has been referred to your local audiology department for a hearing assessment with an audiologist (hearing specialist). This is because the newborn hearing screen did not show clear responses in one or both of your baby’s ears. This does not necessarily mean your baby has a hearing loss. We may not see a clear response if your baby is unsettled, if there is fluid in the ear from the birth or if there is too much noise near your baby when the test is done.
