Extreme hot weather

Prolonged periods of extremely hot weather pose serious health risks. Exposure to excessively high temperatures, especially over long periods, can kill. 

Those most vulnerable to hot weather include: 

  • Older people
  • Very young children 
  • People with pre-existing medical conditions. 

Heat-related illnesses include heat cramps, heat rash, heat oedema, heat syncope, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Heat-related illnesses and severe hot weather can place particular pressure on hospitals, emergency departments and GP surgeries.
