Welsh Public Health Conference 2019

This year’s Welsh Public Health Conference will take place on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 October at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Newport – registration will open soon so save the dates in your diary!

This year will see the conference focus on ‘Building a healthier Wales’, with a clear alignment to the Public Health Wales strategic priorities. We want to create an engaging and inspiring space to encourage conversations and actions looking to deliver real improvements in the public’s health in the long term.

The choice of venue for this year’s conference comes after a detailed procurement process which focused on quality and sustainability, with the ICC being selected.

The ICC Wales, a Welsh Government supported venue, is an £83m project which has taken inspiration from the world’s best convention centres. The result, a spectacular venue that is practically and digitally equipped to deliver world class conventions in Wales whilst bringing a major economic boost to the area.

The ICC has versatile healthy spaces with natural daylight, along with great access to outdoor spaces. The venue strongly supports the use of local produce, supporting regional farmers and producers with a sustainable food waste strategy.

Accessible and inclusive access for all was a really important factor when selecting a suitable venue, we’re pleased that the ICC has good transport options. There is a bus service operated by Newport Council three times an hour departing from Newport Central, for those of you getting the train there are discounted rail fares available when booked with Great Western and for those who must drive there is a large carpark onsite.

The venue will have tangible economic impact to the local community, including the creation of 150 jobs, upskilling local university students and working in line with the Well-being of Future Generations Act – encompassing the conference theme for 2019 of Building a Healthier Future for Wales.

Call for abstracts now open

We’re now seeking abstract submissions for this year’s conference.

The deadline is 18 July 2019, please get them in on time as unfortunately abstracts submitted after this date are not able to be considered. All abstracts must be submitted electronically at www.wphc.wales

Representation and input from all sectors is essential in achieving sustainable systems, cross-sector working and collective thinking. We therefore encourage abstract submissions from across all sectors.

We’re looking for either research or data-driven scientific abstracts or practical abstracts which detail the application of existing knowledge or theory into practice. We’re particularly interested in sustainable partnerships, novel ideas and Public Health relevance for this years’ conference.

The themes for the Welsh Public Health Conference 2019 are aligned to the strategic priorities of Public Health Wales.

We ask that you choose just one of the six themes below for your abstract:

  1. Influencing the wider determinants of health.
  2. Improving mental well-being and resilience.
  3. Promoting healthy behaviours.
  4. Securing a healthy future for the next generation.
