Ethnicity and health in Wales

Wales is less ethnically diverse than any area of England except the North East. It is known that the health of minority ethnic groups in the UK tends to be worse than the white population; tackling inequalities is important in helping to close this health gap.
The Ethnicity and Health in Wales report is being made available to assist service providers and policy makers to have a better understanding of the needs of these groups, with a view to reducing inequalities and improving outcomes. It provides a description of the ethnic make-up of Wales, together with information on the determinants of health and health outcomes they experience, using 2011 Census as the data source.
Nathan Lester, Head of the Observatory Analytical Team said: “The 2011 Census is the richest source of information about ethnicity in Wales. We have used Census data to provide an overview of the demography, health and determinants of ethnic groups in Wales. The provision of information such as this plays an important role in understanding and responding to the needs of ethnic groups in Wales.”
