Masterclass – International Trade and Health

The impact of international trade, financial health and global economies can have a long and lasting impact on population health, as we have seen recently during the COVID-19 pandemic and the current ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Dr Courtney McNamara from Newcastle University and Liz Green from Public Health Wales gave a 90-minute masterclass on heath and trade. The masterclass included presentations and an interactive question and answer discussion looking at the Public Health impacts of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in Wales, and who and how people will be potentially affected.

The Masterclass provided participants with an understanding of:

• Why trade agreements are important to health and well-being across a wide range of sectors and settings, e.g. food and the economy.
• Why trade agreements are important to a wide range of population groups and how they live, and afford to live.
• Why Public Health need to update their knowledge of trade policy so that officers can advocate for health.
• The Health Impact Assessment process in relation to the CPTPP, for example environmental regulations, food standards, cost and supply of goods.
