About diabetic eye screening - Your diabetic eye screening appointment

This short video helps people understand what diabetic eye screening is and why it is important. It guides you through the screening journey, from receiving your screening invitation, having the test to getting your results. It also tells you about the range of support that is available.

Screening is carried out within hospitals, health centres, doctors’ surgeries and some community venues. We also have a number of dedicated PHW screening centres.

We aim to invite you to a venue nearest your home, within 45-minute by car. This will depend on the location and appointments available.

It is important that your doctor has your correct name, address and telephone number, otherwise we may not be able to send your appointment letter to you.

Diabetic Eye Screening Venues within Wales

Below is a list of venues, across North, South and East Wales. For each venue, you will find location information, including the venue name that links through to a Google Map of the venue location. The venues list also includes a What 3 Words address and some information to support you at the venue. Some venues are available in the evening and on Saturdays.

We review this list monthly; however, venue availability may change and may not always be available for booking.

DESW also has access to mobile screening units, which move between certain venues. These will not be listed here. Your appointment may be on one of these vehicles – please contact us to find out more.

PHW Venues:

This is a Public Health Wales/DESW run venue, if your appointment at this venue is not suitable, please contact us to rearrange.  Please note that we cannot accept mail or participant information or medical records at this venue. Any correspondence for DESW must be sent to our Head Office in Treforest or preferably via email. If you are a healthcare professional and wish to send us information, please see our information for professional’s website.

Non – PHW Venues:

DESW works with our third party and local health board partners to offer clinics across venues in Wales. Because these facilities are shared with other services, the availability of appointments at these clinics will vary. They may only operate on certain days of the week and times of day. We may not be able to use the venue every week, and there will be more demand in certain locations because of this.

If you have an appointment or would like to request an appointment at a different venue to one on the list below, please contact us.

Changing my appointment

Contact us if you cannot attend your appointment.  We may be able to offer you a more suitable time, date and location.

Diabetic eye screening appointments are limited.  Let us know if you are not planning to attend; we can offer your appointment to someone else.

If you, or a person you support needs extra help going for screening, contact us before your appointment if you:

  • Need an interpreter because Welsh or English is not your first language.
  • Have mobility requirements or a disability, so we can make sure we offer you an accessible appointment.
  • Need a longer appointment.
  • You think you might not be able to sit in the right position at our cameras.
  • You are caring for someone who cannot make decisions.
  • You have Power of Attorney for health and welfare for the person invited, you will need to bring ID and the Power of Attorney document to their appointment.

Keeping you safe at your appointment

Healthcare staff follow infection and prevention control guidance. This means they follow strict hand cleaning routines and clean all clinic areas and equipment regularly. Hand sanitizer is available. Remember, to stop the spread of infection, please contact DESW if you are experiencing any symptoms of infection or illness.

Preparing for my appointment

Before your appointment:

  • Read the information we sent you.
  • Contact us if you need support at your appointment.
  • Make sure you know where your appointment is.
  • Plan how you will get there, allowing enough time for travel and parking.
  • It will not be safe for you to drive after your appointment and it may be difficult to use a mobile phone. You will need to arrange transport home before you go to your appointment.
  • Attend your appointment on time. If you arrive early you may have to wait. If you are late, we may not be able to screen you.
  • Be aware you may need to pay for parking at some of the screening locations.
  • Allow at least one hour for your appointment.
  • Bring your glasses with you, if you wear them.
  • If you wear contact lenses, bring your container as you will be asked to take your lenses out and may not be able to put them back in straight away. You may prefer to wear your glasses on the day of your appointment.
  • Bring sunglasses with you to wear after your appointment, as your eyes may be more sensitive to light after having drops.
  • If you use a blood glucose monitor, take the readings before your appointment.
  • You may want to bring a snack with you as not all screening locations offer food and drink.
  • It is not safe for you to drive or operate machinery until your sight returns to normal and your eyes are comfortable.
