Your baby’s newborn bloodspot test (heel prick test) suggests they may have congenital hypothyroidism (CHT).
Your baby will need more tests to confirm whether they have CHT.
What is CHT?
CHT is a rare but treatable condition.
Babies with CHT do not make enough of the hormone thyroxine, which is a natural substance made in the body. Thyroxine is produced by a gland in the neck called the thyroid. If left untreated, CHT can lead to long term health problems.
With early diagnosis and treatment, babies with CHT can grow and develop normally, and people with CHT can live healthy, active lives.
What happens next?
A specialist team will arrange more tests to confirm whether your baby has CHT.
It may take a few days for you to receive the results of these tests.
If tests confirm that your baby has CHT, you will receive further support and care from the specialist team. They will explain the condition in more detail, answer your questions and start treatment quickly.
