Test and Post

You can use this service to get a free home test kit for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. You can also get a free kit that will test for blood borne viruses such as HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. You can use these kits in your own home and then post it to the laboratory in the pre-paid envelope. Send everything back with the samples to the laboratory, including the request form, as your samples cannot be tested without it.

Information:

Please note that you will receive your test results by text message from NHS Wales, or if you have opted out of receiving text messages, you will receive an email. The results will usually arrive with you 7 days after sending your test kit. During busy periods this may be up to 21 days.

Home testing kit process

  1. Step 1:Order your kit

    You can order your postal kit online.

    You should receive your test kit within 3-5 working days.

    Please be aware we use Royal Mail which is sometimes impacted by delays. See here for the latest Royal Mail service updates.

  2. Step 2:Your kit arrives in the post

    The test kit packaging is discreet. The outer grey packaging has a small return address for The Doctors Laboratory (which is the lab we use to process your samples). There is no other identifying information. The box itself has an outer sleeve with information about the kit contents and purpose. There are some videos on the Sexual Health Wales Youtube channel that show you what they look like.

    If you order multiple tests (i.e., urine kit and a blood kit) they will arrive in the same packaging. You may receive more than one package is if you have been previously treated for syphilis or if we were unable to confirm the appropriate tests required from your questionnaire.

    If you order condoms, dams or lube with your kit, these will arrive separately.

  3. Step 3:Collect your sample

    Use the kit in the comfort of your own home to collect a sample. Full instructions on how to do this are provided with the kit. If you would like an Easy Read version of the test kit instructions, please email the Sexual Health Team at [email protected]

  4. Step 4:Post your sample

    Post your sample using any Royal Mail post box.

    You can track your test kit’s return to the laboratory by writing down the tracking number on the pre-paid return envelope.

  5. Step 5:Your sample is processed by the lab

    The urine, vaginal, throat, and rectal swab kits test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

    The blood kit tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

  6. Step 6:Receive your results

    You should receive your results within 3 weeks of returning your kit. If you have not had your results within 3 weeks please email [email protected] and we will check your results for you. Please include your full name, date of birth and mobile number. Please note that this mailbox is monitored Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    If all of your results are NEGATIVE and all of your samples were able to be processed, you will receive a text message.

    If any of your results are POSITIVE the sexual health service in your area will be in touch to arrange your free and confidential treatment and care.

    If you have a REACTIVE result, this does NOT mean positive. It just means the test has reacted to something in your blood.
    This first test is very sensitive. It picks up almost all infections, but it may also cross-react with other things in your blood that are not infections.
    If you have a REACTIVE result, then you may need to have a second blood sample taken in a clinic so that further tests can be done.
    In many cases, the initial result is not confirmed, and the final result will be negative.

    If any of your results are REACTIVE the sexual health service in your area will be in touch to arrange further tests if necessary.

In order for us to provide this service we will need some personal data from you which will be collected on a system hosted by Signum Health.  We only collect and process the personal data that is necessary for the particular task that we are carrying out. Public Health Wales recognises that your personal data is very valuable, and so we take its security very seriously.  We employ robust technical measures to secure your personal data and access to it is restricted to people who have a need to process it in line with their work.  In line with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) whenever we collect or process personal data from people we must advise them of how and why we process it, what we do with it and who if anyone we share it with. We do this by means of a Privacy Policy.

Mpox

Home sampling STI kits WILL NOT test for Mpox. You can only get tested for Mpox through the sexual health clinic – please phone your local service to discuss it with them. Stay at home and avoid close contact with other people until you’ve been told what to do. You can find your local sexual health clinic contact details on the NHS 111 Wales website.

Testing positive (or negative for an STI) doesn’t mean you haven’t got Mpox – you will only be tested for Mpox if the doctor assesses you and requests the test.

Community kits

To support the delivery of NHS Wales’s Test and Post service, providing quick and easy access to self-testing sampling kits for sexually-transmitted infections we are now providing kits through a number of community venues.

For those who prefer not to visit a healthcare setting to be tested, those who may not have the digital access to order self-tests online, or individuals who do not have an address suitable for delivery, kits can be obtained from the following sites:
