What your blood test result means
Your initial blood test has shown an unclear result (also known as a reactive result). It simply means that further tests are needed to confirm your result.
Why does a blood test give an unclear result?
Sometimes, blood tests can give an unclear result. This does not mean that you have an infection. It usually happens because of a weak reaction in the test. There are many reasons why this can happen, including:
- you had a mild illness, such as a cold at the time of the test; or
- the blood sample was too warm or too cold while it was being transported to the laboratory.
Often there is no known reason for an unclear result.
Further testing during your pregnancy
To get a clear result, you will be advised to have another blood test. The repeat test is important so that you have a definite result.
You will usually be asked to give the second blood sample at a later antenatal appointment. Your midwife may ask you some questions which will help decide the best time to take this test. Sometimes more than one repeat blood sample is needed to confirm your result.
Your midwife will tell you how and when you can get the results of the repeat blood test (or tests) and will answer any further questions that you may have.
It’s important to share any worries or questions you may have with your midwife. The midwife will support you and help make sure you get the best possible care for both you and your baby.
