Child protection medical assessment process

As part of a Once for Wales approach, the Wales Lead Doctors in Safeguarding (WLDS) Sub-Group of the NHS Wales Safeguarding Network has developed a suite of All-Wales resources to support the Child Protection Medical Assessment process. These resources include separate information leaflets for children and young people, their parents or carers, and a forthcoming patient-information video.

The aim is to improve the quality and consistency of information provided before the medical assessment. Clear, accessible information helps children, young people, parents and carers, to understand what will happen during the assessment, including the consent process. This supports better communication, transparency, and a more positive experience for service users.

These resources should be shared with families before the Child Protection Medical, giving them time to read, watch, and reflect on the process. Social workers involved with the family can provide the information ahead of the health assessment.

Below you will find the patient-information leaflet for children and young people, and the leaflet for parents and carers, available in both Welsh and English.
