About the National Safeguarding Service
Our Mission
The National Safeguarding Service provides strategic leadership for safeguarding in Wales, driving prevention, learning, and continuous improvement, and supports effective protection through national guidance, enabling assurance, and partnership working.
Our Vision
All people in Wales have the right to live and thrive, be seen, heard and respected, and be safe from abuse, neglect, exploitation, gender-based violence and other preventable harms.
How We Work
Working collaboratively with stakeholders including Welsh Government, Health Boards, NHS Trusts and Regional Safeguarding Boards, the National Safeguarding Service aims to:
- Ensure safeguarding is a priority within the NHS prevention agenda.
- Enhance integration and collaboration across NHS Wales and partner agencies.
- Improve and strengthen the effectiveness of safeguarding practice.
- Influence national safeguarding priorities across NHS Wales, with a focus on quality improvement.
Designated professionals provide system leadership and independent expert safeguarding advice from an All-Wales perspective.
The Network
Professionally led by the National Safeguarding Service (NHS Wales), ‘the Network’ provides a vital bridge between strategies and arrangements at local level and national policy developments to support NHS Wales Health Boards and Trusts in discharging their responsibilities for safeguarding people.
Sub-groups
Network sub-groups act as community of practice and facilitators of joint safeguarding improvement activity. 5 sub-groups cover the following areas:
- Training and Learning
- Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (VAWDASV)
- Mental Capacity Act/Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
- Looked After Children
- Wales Lead Doctors for Safeguarding
