Deaths by Suspected Suicide Data 2023 to 2024

Summary:

Deaths reported in the surveillance reports are those determined to be suspected suicides by the Police. Deaths by suspected suicide are reported almost immediately to the RTSSS, and so they have not been to a coroner’s inquest. As a result, it is anticipated that the number of deaths reported here will be higher than the number of suicides, as determined by a Coroner. This is because a Coroner's investigation is thorough and given more time to determine the cause and circumstances of death. It is possible for a suspected suicide to have a different cause of death following a Coroner’s inquest. Data on deaths by suspected suicide reported by RTSSS are different from suicide data as reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Suicides reported by ONS include deaths which are registered following an inquest where a coroner has determined: - a suicide conclusion - a narrative conclusion - an open conclusion The analyses presented in this workbook is of the 359 deaths in 2022/23 and 350 deaths in 2023/24 by suspected suicide of Welsh residents only.
