The term mental health covers many different conditions. Mood problems are common involving both low mood (depression) and less commonly, over excitable mood (or mania). Anxiety is another common condition , as are more long standing personality disorder problems.
Employers can expect to find, that at any one time, nearly one in six of their workforce can be affected by a mental health condition. It can be difficult to know when ‘stress' turns into a mental health problem, or when existing mental health problems are made worse by stress at work.
There are a variety of treatments available for those suffering from mental health conditions and most people will recover fully in time. The vast majority of people who have experienced a mental health condition continue to work, or return to work, successfully.
The Shaw Trust estimates that Welsh employers could be losing £292 million a year to mental health conditions. Averaging this cost across the Welsh employee population is a cost of around £1,035 per employee. So, a small organisation employing 50 people will typically incur costs of around £50,000 a year because of mental ill health among its employees.

Pledge and Employer toolkit
The Time to Change Wales pledge is a public declaration that an organisation wants to step up to tackle mental health stigma and discrimination. It isn’t a quality mark, accreditation or endorsement. There is no test or application. You just have to commit to taking actions that are realistic and right for you that will lead to a reduction in discrimination within your organisation and the wider community. The employer toolkit was launched in early 2019, it is a repository of self-service information and resources for employers embarking on anti-stigma work. Wellbeing support by telephone for essential staff
Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are always there to listen. Essential services staff who are working on the frontlines can call free on 116 123 to speak in confidence with a trained listening volunteer. Universal support is also available via the web app if you prefer support without having to discuss your feelings with someone else.
What is Stress?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines stress as “the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them”. Pressure is part of life and act as a motivator. However, stress can be caused due to prolonged periods of excessive pressure. If stress is excessive or goes on for some time, it can lead to mental and physical ill health.
Factors at home or work can cause stress and how people cope with pressure will be strongly influenced by a variety of factors, including support available from the workplace, friends, family, and personal coping mechanisms.
Employers who promote positive mental wellbeing in the workplace significantly support their workforce. Work-related stress, depression or anxiety continues to represent a significant ill health condition in the workforce of Great Britain. In 2017/18 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 44% of all work-related ill health cases and 57% of all working days lost due to ill health.
