Introduction
We conducted this rapid summary during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic to support those looking to provide mass vaccination in non-healthcare settings.
Main points
How up to date is this evidence?
Searches for this rapid summary were conducted in 2020 and includes literature published between 2009 and 2020.
What we found
We identified eight guidelines or operational manuals/tools, one systematic review and 15 descriptive case studies on the topic. Various different model locations were identified from case studies including drive-through and walk-through models, as well as Onsite/mobile clinics located in convenient places.
Guidelines and recommendations provided advice on clinic layout, flow, and processes for walk-through influenza vaccination clinics in non-healthcare settings, as well as infection prevention and control measures relevant to COVID-19 vaccination.
Systematic review evidence highlighted some important factors to consider around the effectiveness of drive through clinics, and how combining multiple points of dispensing across a region may improve efficiency.
What this means
This summary may help identify key points on the topic. However, the included research has not been assessed for quality and comes from a wide range of published material.
Technical information
We searched academic databases and grey literature to identify and summarise research evidence to answer the following question:
- What models of delivery exist for mass vaccination in non-healthcare settings, such as drive-through or mobile facilities? Which are the most efficient or effective?
Glossary
Systematic review: A review that summarises the evidence on a clearly formulated review question according to a predefined protocol, using systematic and explicit methods to identify, select and appraise relevant studies, and to extract, analyse, collate and report their findings. It may or may not use statistical techniques, such as meta-analysis
