Keeping connected

Just like adults, it’s good for children to talk to other people outside the household at this time.  Using video tools or other digital media to see and talk to grandparents and other family and friends will help them feel connected and provide an opportunity to practice their social skills.  Learning to ask relevant questions is another important social skill to learn. Depending on their age, encourage them to think about the sort of questions that they might like to ask, even if it is just “What have you been doing today?  Did you enjoy it?”

Including grandparents or other important adults in your toddler’s life in their bedtime routine is another great way to stay in touch. You could arrange a time to call and read a bedtime story together or ask friends and family to record a video of themselves reading one of your child’s favourite stories, just like a CBeebies bedtime story.
