Why are pregnant women considered vulnerable?

Pregnant women are no more likely to catch coronavirus than the general population, and current evidence suggests that if they do, they will generally experience mild to moderate cold or flu-like symptoms.  However, for a small number of women, pregnancy alters the way in which their bodies respond to severe viral infection.  This is why the Welsh Government has placed them in the vulnerable group.

Pregnant women who suffer from significant heart disease, or other serious underlying condition will have to be extra careful, and follow Welsh Government advice on shielding vulnerable people.
