The programme follows the Emergency Laparotomy Collaborative UK model. The Emergency Laparotomy Cymru programme is working with multi-disciplinary teams in the 13 hospitals involved and there are three clinical leads progressing the work across local regions.
The multi-disciplinary team review the care pathways of each patient (from admission to hospital through to post-surgery recovery) and record their data. This feeds into a new all-Wales data dashboard to help each team better understand their processes and identify areas for improvement. The data is also used to identify variation between hospitals which helps teams learn from each other and share good practice.
A Six Step Care Bundle is also being used by the hospital teams to improve standards of care.
Learning events to share good practice and improvement training aim to give clinicians in Wales the appropriate skills to become self-sustaining in delivering and supporting the implementation of the 6 step care bundle and to improve standards of care and outcomes for patients across Wales.
