Our role

In Wales, responsibility for dealing with contaminated land rests primarily with local authorities and Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Public Health Wales does not have any statutory role in the process but can offer specialist advice to help mitigate risks to the public during assessment, remediation (clean-up) and future land use. Public Health Wales also advises Welsh Government on policy to protect public health and optimise benefits and sustainable reuse in line with The Well Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015

If you have concerns regarding land contamination, local authorities will likely be best to advise. However, if concerns are health-related, Public Health Wales can advise.
