Public Health Wales prepares for Brexit

Public Health Wales has established a programme of work to ensure business continuity following Brexit, particularly in the event of a “no-deal” scenario.

The programme of work to oversee our Brexit response is being led jointly by Dr Quentin Sandifer, Director of Public Health Services, and Professor Mark Bellis, our Director of Policy, Research and International Development.

Colleagues are focusing on business continuity, health security, the wider and longer-term public health impacts of Brexit, and the implications for our staff and resources.

As part of the programme, the team is undertaking specific continuity planning to make sure we’re able to minimise any potential disruption.

We are also undertaking joint work with Public Health England around ensuring appropriate arrangements are in place for key public health functions, such as surveillance, emergency responses, vaccine/counter measures and field epidemiology.

Dr Quentin Sandifer said: Brexit is a very uncertain time for everyone, but I’d like to reassure colleagues that a great deal of work is ongoing to make sure our key services are able to continue and that our staff have the information and support they need.

“I feel very reassured by all the hard work going on across the organisation, and would like to thank all of our colleagues who are contributing to our preparedness for Brexit.”

Staff who are EU nationals are encouraged to look at the information designed for them on our intranet site at:  http://howis.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/888/page/74664
