Judi Rhys was born in Neath and brought up in Porthcawl. She began her career in the NHS, working in the field of health promotion in the South Wales Valleys.

Judi then worked in higher education, first at the Open University where she was responsible for researching, writing and overseeing the delivery of a suite of health and social care courses, and then at Cardiff University where she led on academic staff development across the organisation. Following a brief spell in local government, leading a large health improvement unit, Judi was appointed first as Director of Diabetes UK Cymru, then as Director of MS Society Cymru, before being promoted to the role of UK Director of Operations at MS Society.

In recent years, Judi has held Chief Executive roles at two UK-wide charities - Arthritis Care and the British Liver Trust. She holds postgraduate qualifications in health promotion, education, management and executive coaching and attended the ‘Women and Power’ programme at JFK School of Government, Harvard University in 2010. Judi is also a licenced trainer for the Springboard Women’s Development programme and has been a mentor for ACEVO members and on the Fabian Women’s Mentoring programme.

Judi serves on the Board of Samaritans Cymru and is a former chair of the Wales Neurological Alliance. She achieved an ACEVO Fellowship award in 2015 and led Arthritis Care to win the Third Sector Fundraising Team of the Year in 2016.

Judi lives in Cardiff with her husband. Between them, they have four adult children and four granddaughters. Judi is a keen runner, with a record of success in long distance events.
